Visitor & Guest Policy

• Residents are responsible for discussing their plans for company with their room/suitemates prior to their arrival on campus out of respect for their need to sleep and study. This includes other resident visitors.
• Residents are responsible for ensuring their guests/visitors know and follow all GCC and CV policies as residents are held accountable for the behavior of their guests and visitors.
• Residents are responsible for ensuring that any non-resident guests/visitors arriving or staying past Quiet Hours (see below) meet them at the Safety office to sign-in with a valid photo ID, as well as vehicle information if applicable, before entering any College Village residence halls. Guests are required to carry valid ID, and produce it when asked, at all times while on College Village property. Safety may be available at the Village Hall office at the center of the College Village complex during scheduled evening and weekend hours, or can be reached at 585-345-6500 to confirm where to meet for sign-in.
• Residents are required to stay with their guest/visitor at all times. Residents may not leave their guests/visitors in their room/suite while going to class, practice, work, etc.
• Residents are limited to one (1) overnight guest/visitor to stay at College Village for a maximum of 3 days and 2 nights at a time. Once an overnight guest leaves College Village, they are not permitted to be an overnight guest for 10 days even if signing-in with another resident.
• Residents are not permitted to register their guest/visitor with other residents to prolong their stay.
• Any guest/visitor under the age of 17 is expected to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while on College Village property.
• Failure to comply with Visitor and Guest policy will be addressed through the conduct system; outcomes may include but are not limited to:
  • Roommate Agreement re-evaluation
  • Room Re-Assignment
  • Loss of Guest privileges
  • Guest/Visitor being placed on the restricted list and be subject to trespass charges.
  • Continued or dangerous violations may be elevated to the Dean of Student’s office for review.

Review the “Housing Regulations” for the current residential expectations on policies and procedures. Note that during breaks, summer, and interim periods a No Guest policy may be imposed.

SUMMER GUEST POLICY

During the Summer term, College Village restricts evening and overnight guests to weekends: Friday and Saturday nights only. This is to support students taking accelerated courses in their need to sleep and study.  Residents are expected to discuss plans for guests and visitors with any room/suitemates in advance. Residents who have a guest/visitor arriving or staying past posted quiet hours are expected to sign them in at the Safety office prior to entering any CV residential buildings.

Residents who fail or refuse to follow the expectations, or who permit guests/visitors that violate policy, will be required to participate in a conduct meeting. Possible outcomes could include: educational sessions, loss of guest/visitor privileges, loss of housing, etc. Residents are encouraged to email CollegeVillage@genesee.edu for clarification as needed, prior to brining an individual to campus.

Residents are expected to observe Quiet Hours in order to establish a respect among residents for the studying and sleeping habits of others within an academic residential environment. They take place at the following times:

• 10:00 PM – 8:00 AM
• Final Exam Period: 24 Hour Quiet Hours during final exam and interim periods
• 24 Hour Courtesy Hours
  • Outside of quiet hours residents are expected to be respectful to the needs of others. If another resident approaches you and requests that you quiet down, please agree or move your activity to another location regardless of the time.

For the safety of all community members, only nine (9) people may be in a suite at the same time, including the assigned residents. This is to help reduce any issues with evacuating in the event of an emergency, as well as respect the needs of others to sleep and study. Residents are welcome to gather in common area lounges such as the Root or a variety of locations on campus such as the Student Union, Forum stage, Cafeteria, etc. Students can also attend events, join a club or organization, or talk to a staff member about planning an event at the college to gather around shared interests.

• College Village is a DRY campus. This means that no alcohol or marijuana is allowed, even if you are over 21.  Also, illegal substances are not permitted. Any prescription medication should be used only as prescribed by a licensed medical professional. Smoking or vaping of any substance is not permitted indoors.
• SUNY, GCC, and College Village want to remind students that the use of opioids, especially when outside the guidance of a licensed medical professional is not only prohibited on campus but dangerous. If you or someone you know needs help with issues related to substance use, we encourage you to connect with the appropriate resources. First responder staff are trained in the use of NARCAN for emergency situations for the safety of all students.

• As a SUNY Campus, smoking is not permitted inside or within 25ft of a building. Smoking includes but is not limited to: bongs, cigarettes, cigars, joints, vapes, other electronic or smoking apparatuses.

• In the event of a fire or fire alarm, all residents are expected to evacuate the building immediately.
• Tampering or disabling life safety equipment is a crime and will result in a conduct meeting that could incur fines, mandatory training, and possibly a loss of housing. “Life safety” equipment includes: fire extinguishers, stove alarms, smoke detectors, sprinkler heads and pipes, fire alarm pull stations, fog lights, etc.
• If any of these devices are damaged or not functioning properly, you are responsible for reporting it right away through the Maintenance Request form.

Use of the Fire Pit and Charcoal Grill area:

Residents are expected to email CollegeVillage@genesee.edu to request and reserve use of the Fire Pit and Charcoal Grill area down at the Rec Court in advance and wait for written approval. Unsafe use of CV equipment or violations of GCC and CV policies (illegal substances, weapons, violence, etc.) may result in conduct sanctions such as loss of privileges and removal.

If approved to use equipment:

• Must supply own wood and kindling.
• Host must stay by the fire until it is safety extinguished.
• Notify Safety Office at the start and end of event to ensure safely started and extinguished.
• Be respectful of quiet hours and students needing to sleep and study.
• Participants should practice Fire Safety
  • Remain a safe distance from the fire

  • If fire is no longer reasonable, designate someone to call SAFETY and 911.

• Pets are not permitted on campus or to enter any building. Students with documentation for a service animal or in need of an accommodation are encouraged to contact the office of Access and Accommodations at access@genesee.edu for assistance.
